Mr. Roosevelt

Mr. Roosevelt

(2017)

In the heart of 1960s America, “Mr. Roosevelt” unfolds a poignant dramedy that follows the life of Eleanor “Ellie” Roosevelt, a struggling New York City artist grappling with a major life transition. After a failed marriage and a series of dead-end jobs, Ellie is determined to carve out her own identity in an increasingly tumultuous world. At the center of her journey is an unexpected inheritance: a charming yet rundown house in the Hudson Valley, left to her by her estranged grandmother, who claimed it housed the spirit of Franklin D. Roosevelt.

As Ellie arrives to claim her inheritance, she finds herself not only faced with the daunting task of renovating the old estate but also contending with the eccentric locals who are staunch believers in the house’s connection to the long-deceased president. Among them is the fast-talking town historian, Mark, who introduces her to a motley crew of quirky neighbors, each with their own stories and secrets tied to FDR’s legacy. Throughout her renovation journey, Ellie unearths more than just the house’s hidden charms; she discovers fragments of her family’s history, as well as her own suppressed dreams.

As Ellie learns to balance her artistic ambitions with her responsibilities, she strikes up an unlikely friendship with Helen, the town’s elderly archivist and FDR enthusiast, who becomes a motherly figure and mentor. Together, they organize community events to celebrate local history, inadvertently reviving patriotic passion among residents. However, Ellie must confront past demons, including unresolved feelings for her ex-husband, who unexpectedly appears in search of closure.

Themes of rediscovery, belonging, and the power of community weave through the narrative, leading Ellie to not only embrace her own identity but also to forge deep connections with the townspeople, bridging the gap between the past and her present. Each episode layers humor with heartfelt moments, painting a vivid portrait of women, both past and present, who dared to defy expectations.

“Mr. Roosevelt” invites viewers to reflect on how history shapes us, while celebrating the beauty of finding home in the most unexpected places. With a vibrant cast of characters and an enchanting setting, this series is a rich tapestry of resilience, dreams, and the unbreakable bonds of community.
