Bigger Than Africa

Bigger Than Africa

(2018)

In a world where dreams and reality intertwine, “Bigger Than Africa” follows the journey of Amina, a fiercely independent African artist who returns to her homeland after a decade abroad. With her latest exhibit set to open in her native Ghana, Amina grapples with the complexities of her identity while confronting the shadows of her past. When she discovers that her estranged father, a renowned but reclusive painter, has fallen into obscurity, she feels compelled to bridge the chasm between them.

Set against the vibrant backdrop of Ghana’s art scene, the series introduces a diverse ensemble of characters, including Kofi, a passionate journalist seeking to uncover the truth behind cultural appropriation in the art world, and Yara, Amina’s childhood friend-turned-business mogul whose success contrasts sharply with Amina’s struggles. The two women’s diverging paths reveal the tensions between tradition and innovation, success and authenticity.

As Amina immerses herself in local culture, she uncovers tales of resilience shared by artists facing systemic challenges. Through intimate portrayals of poverty and wealth, love and ambition, the narrative explores themes of belonging and the quest for self-acceptance. The beauty of Ghana’s landscapes juxtaposes the harsh realities many face, creating a stirring backdrop for Amina’s transformation.

Brought together by fate, Amina and Kofi embark on a quest to paint an evocative mural that tells the story of their ancestors. Along the way, they confront societal issues such as gender inequality and the exploitation of local artisans. Amina’s relationship with her father is tested as they attempt to reconcile their artistic visions, forcing her to confront her deepest fears of inadequacy and familial love.

“Bigger Than Africa” is not just a celebration of art; it is a poignant exploration of cultural identity and the strength found within community ties. As tensions rise and creativity flourishes, Amina must decide what it means to be truly free in a world that often seeks to define her. This moving series is an inspiring testament to the idea that art transcends boundaries and that one’s legacy can be both personal and universal, ultimately proving that the human spirit is, indeed, bigger than the continent from which it hails.
