Susuk

Susuk

(2023)

In a small, secluded village in Malaysia, “Susuk” unravels a haunting tale steeped in culture, superstition, and our deepest desires. The story follows Amira, a talented but struggling beauty artist who dreams of making it big in the fiercely competitive world of fashion and glamour. Her mundane life takes a dark turn when she uncovers the hidden art of “susuk,” an ancient practice believed to imbue individuals with irresistible beauty and allure through mystical incantations and mysterious objects inserted under the skin.

Desperate for success, Amira is drawn into a web of temptation when she meets Siti, a charismatic older woman who serves as a mentor and introduces her to the world of susuk. Siti is a former beauty queen haunted by her own past; she knows well the sacrifices that beauty demands. As Amira navigates the thrill of newfound attention and success, she also grapples with unexpected consequences that come hand in hand with her choices. Her transformation draws the admiration of the fashionable elite and thrusts her into the limelight, but it also awakens darker forces buried within the village.

Meanwhile, tensions rise as the village elders, aware of the sinister implications of susuk, attempt to restore balance and protect their community from its corrupting influence. Among them is Ibrahim, Amira’s childhood friend, who grapples with his own feelings for her and his desire to protect their heritage. With the ancient rites of their ancestors at stake, Ibrahim finds himself caught between his love for Amira and his duty to his community.

As Amira’s beauty and fame rise, so too does a series of chilling events—rumors of curses, disappearance of village women, and the unraveling sanity of those who have used susuk. Torn between ambition and morality, Amira must confront the price of beauty, the power of the supernatural, and the grip of her own desires. In a gripping climax, “Susuk” weaves a tale that captures the timeless struggle between the pursuit of dreams and the darker shadows that linger behind them, challenging viewers to ponder what truly makes one beautiful.
