Drowning by Numbers

Drowning by Numbers

(1988)

In a quaint coastal town where the ocean’s waves whisper secrets, “Drowning by Numbers” follows the intertwined lives of three women whose seemingly mundane existences unravel into a thrilling mystery. Each character grapples with their own demons, pushing them towards a shared obsession with a series of unexplained drownings that have puzzled the local community and the law enforcement who cannot draw the right connections.

Clara, a meticulous statistician, finds herself drawn into the chaos as she methodically begins to map out the patterns of the drownings. With her analytical mind, she unveils a chilling coincidence – each victim was connected to a woman from the town, directly or indirectly. Clara’s world of numbers begins to blur with the eerie fears of the community, as she becomes increasingly consumed by her project, to the detriment of both her relationships and her mental health.

Amelia, a local bartender with a flair for storytelling, uses the incidents as fodder for her late-night tales, unaware that her casual narratives may unearth buried truths. Haunted by the loss of her younger sister, who tragically drowned years earlier under mysterious circumstances, Amelia finds herself questioning her own memories while also battling the guilt of possibly exploiting the pain of those around her for entertainment.

Lastly, there’s Maeve, a reclusive artist who channels her trauma into hauntingly beautiful paintings. As the drownings escalate, Maeve is compelled to confront her past, revealing how the ocean holds both her salvation and her nightmares. As her artwork becomes increasingly abstract and disturbing, she unwittingly provides clues that tie her to Clara and Amelia, deepening the mystery surrounding the town.

As the three women’s paths converge, they uncover a web of hidden truths that reveal not only the harrowing link between the drownings but also the dark side of their seemingly idyllic town. With tensions mounting and secrets surfacing, “Drowning by Numbers” dives into themes of grief, obsession, and the nuances of human connection. In a quest for answers, they must confront their own fears and find solace in one another, challenging the very nature of how they see themselves—and the haunting depths of the sea that harbors their pasts.
