Ingrid Goes West

Ingrid Goes West

(2017)

Ingrid Goes West follows Ingrid Thorburn, an unstable young woman grappling with the aftermath of her mother’s death and the isolation of her mundane life. Desperate for connection in a digital age, Ingrid becomes infatuated with Taylor Sloane, a glamorous influencer living the perfect life in sunny Los Angeles. Social media feeds filled with Taylor’s flawless selfies and envy-inducing adventures spark a ravenous desire in Ingrid—a need to escape her own loneliness.

With a determination that veers into obsession, Ingrid relocates to LA, intent on befriending Taylor. She crafts a new identity, adopting the same carefree aesthetic as her idol, creating the illusion of a perfect life in a city that thrives on superficiality. Through a series of calculated encounters and carefully staged coincidences, Ingrid manages to infiltrate Taylor’s inner circle, becoming a part of her seemingly idyllic world.

As their friendship blossoms, Ingrid’s mental health deteriorates, blurring the lines between reality and the curated perfection of social media. Taylor, genuine yet oblivious to Ingrid’s unraveling psyche, becomes increasingly reliant on her new friend for support as she deals with her own struggles of authenticity in an image-obsessed industry. The pair form an unlikely bond that oscillates between true camaraderie and toxic dependency, challenging both women to confront their vulnerabilities and fears.

Ingrid Goes West masterfully explores themes of identity, obsession, and the dark side of social media culture. As Ingrid descends deeper into her fantasy life, viewers are taken on a roller coaster of emotions—laughing at her absurd antics, gasping at her increasingly erratic behavior, and ultimately empathizing with her profound loneliness. The series is a poignant examination of how social media can distort our perceptions of friendship, love, and self-worth.

With a vibrant and eclectic Los Angeles backdrop, coupled with sharp wit and dark humor, Ingrid Goes West is both a cautionary tale and an introspective look at the human condition. As the story unfolds, audiences are left questioning the lengths we go to for connection and the often invisible battles we face in our quest for belonging in a digital age.
