Lean on Pete

Lean on Pete

(2017)

In the heart of the American Midwest, “Lean on Pete” follows the poignant journey of a troubled but determined teenager named Charley. Struggling to find his place in a world that seems indifferent to his existence, Charley navigates life with a blend of youthful optimism and harsh reality. His days are filled with small-town monotony until he discovers a job at a rundown racetrack, where he finds solace in caring for animals and a sense of purpose.

When Charley meets Lean on Pete, an aging racehorse past his prime, he feels an immediate connection. Lean on Pete is more than just a horse; he represents hope, friendship, and the possibility of a better life. Charley’s bond with the horse grows stronger, and he learns the harsh realities of the racing world—the pressures, the triumphs, and the inevitable losses that beckon like shadows. Yet, in these moments, Charley finds an unexpected family among the misfits at the track, including the grizzled trainer, Del, who becomes a reluctant mentor, and Bonnie, an aspiring jockey with dreams of her own.

As Charley’s personal life unravels, with the instability of his family driving him to seek escape, he makes the heart-wrenching decision to save Lean on Pete from a fate he refuses to accept. Together, they embark on a desperate cross-country journey, braving against the elements, confronting societal challenges, and searching for Charley’s estranged aunt. Along the way, they forge a bond that transcends words—built on loyalty, companionship, and the unbreakable spirit of hope.

“Lean on Pete” is a visually stunning exploration of love, loss, and resilience. It mirrors the struggles of youth as Charley grapples with identity and belonging, fueled by the desire to protect the one creature that represents unwavering loyalty. As they journey toward an uncertain future, Charley learns that sometimes the greatest strength lies not in standing alone, but in leaning on those we cherish the most. Through heartache and discovery, he ultimately finds that the bonds of love can redefine one’s sense of home.
