Self/less

Self/less

(2015)

In a near-future world where technology has advanced beyond imagination, “Self/less” explores the moral and existential implications of radical body-switching. At its center is Damian Hale, a wealthy but terminally ill real estate mogul who has spent his life acquiring everything he desires—but now faces the ultimate threat: death. In a desperate bid for survival, he undergoes an experimental procedure that transfers his consciousness into a genetically-engineered younger body.

Initially thrilled with his new lease on life, Damian revels in the vigor of youth and the opportunities of his new identity. He takes on the name Edward and begins to experience a world he had long abandoned—the thrill of love, adventure, and even the simple joy of a morning commute. However, as he navigates this new life, unsettling memories of the original host begin to seep into his consciousness, revealing a darker past that Damian had no idea he was entangled with.

The plot thickens as Edward inadvertently uncovers a hidden network of rogue experiments led by the company responsible for the body-switching technology. Amongst them is a vengeful spirit longing for freedom, harnessed by pain and betrayal. The stakes rise when Edward learns that his very existence is being threatened, as corporate agents close in, determined to silence him and keep their dark practices under wraps.

Throughout this thrilling narrative, themes of identity, ethical boundaries, and the societal implications of life-extension technology unfold. The lines between self and other blur as Edward struggles with the question: What does it mean to be truly alive? Engaging friendships form with a scrappy investigative journalist and an enigmatic hacker, both fighting against the corporate machine, while flashes of the original host’s life become a haunting backdrop.

As the race against time intensifies, Edward must confront his past choices, the meaning of sacrifice, and ultimately make a harrowing decision about whether to reclaim his life or let the memories of a forgotten self guide him towards an uncertain future. “Self/less” invites viewers on a journey that examines the essence of humanity in a world where the boundaries of life and death are no longer as clear as they once were.
