Short Term 12

Short Term 12

(2013)

In the heart of a bustling city, “Short Term 12” unfolds within the walls of a group home for at-risk teens struggling with the scars of their pasts. The series introduces Grace, a passionate and dedicated supervisor who is trying to balance her own turbulent emotions while guiding her residents toward healing. Grace is an intuitive listener, providing a warm and nurturing environment that encourages the teens to share their fears and dreams, but she often grapples with her own unresolved issues stemming from a traumatic childhood.

Alongside her is Mason, a charismatic and compassionate counselor, who has built deep connections with the residents. He serves as Grace’s confidant and partner in navigating the challenges of their demanding jobs, all while confronting his own complicated relationship with commitment and fear of vulnerability. Together, they believe in the transformative power of empathy, but their resolve is tested as they face unexpected crises triggered by the lives of the teens in their care.

The series features a rotating cast of characters: Jaden, a fiercely independent girl struggling with abandonment issues; Marcus, a talented artist grappling with the pressures of expectation; and Sam, a quiet boy haunted by a troubled home life. Each episode peels back the layers of their stories, revealing the complexities of their backgrounds while exploring profound themes of resilience, identity, and the search for belonging.

As the series progresses, Grace and Mason find their own lives intertwined with those of the teens. When an unexpected situation arises—a threat of closure from funding cuts—courage and resilience become paramount. The staff and residents must unite not only to protect their home but also to find their voices in the face of adversity.

“Short Term 12” weaves an emotionally charged narrative that blends humor and heartbreak, stark realities and fleeting moments of joy. It invites viewers to reflect on the importance of connection, the struggles that define us, and the courage it takes to hope again. With its authentic portrayal of mental health and personal growth, this series serves as a poignant reminder that sometimes, the most profound transformations happen in the spaces where we feel most lost.
